5103 Admiralty - Biography of Margot Lenigk -

Margot was born in Berlin-Schoeneberg, Germany, December 1, 1911. Her father, Albert Stein, was the son of a wealthy factory owner in which they invented Portland cement. Margot grew up in the country north of Frankfort.  She married, Wolfgang Lenigk, and they immigrated to Indonesia, Sumatra.

Her husband was employed as a quinine plantation supervisor. They lived in the jungle at a 7000 ft. elevation. Margot and her husband had three children and the fourth on its way when war broke out.

They were in Dutch territory and her husband along with the other German men were sent away to internment in India. With no money and a fourth child on the way, Margot changed from a shy young woman to be an advocate for her children and the other women and their families. Finally, the Red Cross helped, and a protection camp was set up for 200 women and children.

She later moved to Japan and continued there 6 more years before going back to Germany on an American ship. Margot eventually immigrated to the U.S. to Oakland, California. She was a school teacher for 30 years teaching German and English. She still teaches a class in German at the Senior Center in Belmont.

After retiring, Margot took up swimming and she has been in many competitions over the years including the 1989 World Championship Games in Munich, Germany and many senior Olympic games. One week before her 80th birthday Margot received the "Presidential Sports Award" (from President George Bush, in 1991) for swimming 25 miles in 3 months. At age 90 she competed in the January swim, swimming for I hour without interruption. She still swims three times a week. Margot's memoirs are in the University of Stanford, California Archives.

Margot's Memoirs make a good suspense story... only it is real.
